What’s the test of a pediatric dental office that really gets kids? Why, a partnership with the tooth fairy, of course! Alameda Pediatric Dentistry makes it possible for fairies to come and go with our installation of several fairy doors. You never know, these magical, winged creatures may be watching and taking notes at any moment, writing down the names of kids with loose teeth and preparing for a visit to their homes.
Alameda Pediatric Dentistry is not alone in our friendliness to fairies. The Alameda Fairy Doors Facebook group currently has 1,200 members that create custom-made doors and place them in hidden nooks around the island. They even have a map of where 250 doors (and growing) have been spotted around town. No wonder Alameda Magazine has dubbed this the “Best Ongoing Scavenger Hunt” around.
Our office is lucky to have hygienist Lisa Hernandez, an Alameda Fairy Doors member, who makes the doors for our office and examination rooms. Lisa enjoys creating fun ways to educate her patients and their parents, and she considers herself a big kid at heart. Her beautiful fairy doors are proof of that spirit we so love.
“I mentor two little girls in Oakland,” Lisa says. “This is a great way to spend time to get to know them on a personal level. I got started making and painting the fairy doors three years ago. I had an art studio on 5th and Embarcadero that would always have scrap wood laying around.”
In addition to inviting the fairies, Lisa says a door often represents the opening of new possibilities and challenges in the future. “It represents opportunity in life. I keep this in mind for the girls.”
