February is National Children’s Dental Health Month (NCDHM). All month long, dental professionals, healthcare providers, and educators will come together to promote the benefits of good oral health. Each year, the theme for NCDHM changes. For 2017, the theme is “Choose Tap Water for a Sparkling Smile.” Here are just some of the reasons why tap water is best:
- Soda contains caffeine, known to cause everything from jitters, upset stomach, and headaches to difficulty concentrating, difficulty sleeping, and increased heart rate and blood pressure.
- A 12-ounce soda contains about 10 teaspoons of sugar.
- Think juice is less sweet? Think again; orange juice matches cola and orange soda in sugar content.
- Sports drinks are often considered a suitable alternative to water, but they contain as many as 13 spoonfuls of sugar per bottle.
- Water has many important jobs in the body; your cells need water to function normally.
- Drinking water after eating a meal helps to wash away bacteria and keep your teeth clean.
One of the ways that Alameda Pediatric Dentistry helps spread the word about the benefits of tap water is through our Tooth Fairy Island program. We visit schools to share customized Tooth Fairy Island presentations and activities to engage and excite kids about how to maintain a healthy mouth and body.
In the month of February alone, Alameda Pediatric Dentistry staff will visit up to 10 schools throughout the Bay Area, including Alameda, Oakland, Pleasanton, Dublin, and Livermore.
