If you wore braces as a teenager, you probably remember those gag-inducing molds you had to bite into in order to create an impression of your teeth. Lucky for your kids, those days are gone, at least within Alameda Pediatric Dentistry’s doors.
Our orthodontic department said goodbye to messy traditional molds with the introduction of our newest in-office gadget, the high-precision iTero scanner. It’s a great new benefit for our patients and families, and our doctors and staff love it too.
The compact footprint iTero scanner works by capturing a topographical scan of your child’s mouth to create a 3D image of their teeth. No radiation is emitted in the process. The image is instantly saved to our office’s lab and study model sites.
“The scanner is more accurate than traditional impressions and takes half the time,” says Alameda Pediatric Dentistry’s orthodontist, Dr. Kan. According to dental assistants Jessica and Lisa, taking a scan is easy and quick, and consists of moving a small wand over all the surfaces of the teeth to accurately record their position in your child’s mouth. Patients are excited there are no more alginate, or “goo” molds.
“They love to watch the screen as the scan is created. When we’re done scanning, they say, ‘That’s it?!’” Jessica says.
Parents, who can also watch the scan take place, have been very impressed with the technology, its efficiency during appointments, and the improved experience it makes for the kids overall.
One scan lasts for 10 years and can be used to create orthodontic appliances like retainers and Invisalign products.
