4 Daily Do’s for National Dental Hygiene Month

October is National Dental Hygiene Month! We appreciate our hard-working dental hygienists every day of the year. Dental hygienists play a critical role in promoting oral health, and they make your twice-yearly visit to the office fun and seamless. This month, health care professionals across the nation are spreading the word to help dental hygienists maintain healthy smiles.

Take part by helping your little ones remember these four daily care basics:

  1. Brush morning and night with a soft-bristle brush. Use short strokes, and don’t forget to brush your tongue!
  2. Use floss to clean between your teeth and remove the plaque your toothbrush can’t reach. Kids can use special flossers with handles to reach between molars.
  3. If you don’t have time to brush after every meal and snack, a simple rinse can help a lot! Rinsing can help to wash away food particles and bacteria, reducing the chances for dental decay.
  4. Did you know that chewing sugar-free gum can kill 100 million bacteria in 10 minutes? Chewing gum after meals increases saliva flow, which helps remove food debris, remineralize tooth enamel, and neutralize plaque acids. And kids like it!

Here’s why we recommend chewing gum with xylitol: Something to Chew On: Gum Is Good for You.
