Benefits of High-Tech Scanning at Alameda Pediatric Dentistry

An APD customized maxillary retainer

If you wore braces as a teenager, you probably remember those gag-inducing molds you had to bite into in order to create an impression of your teeth. Lucky for your kids, those days are gone, at least within Alameda Pediatric Dentistry’s doors.

Our orthodontic department said goodbye to messy traditional molds with the introduction of our newest in-office gadget, the high-precision iTero scanner. It’s a great new benefit for our patients and families, and our doctors and staff love it too.

The compact footprint iTero scanner works by capturing a topographical scan of your child’s mouth to create a 3D image of their teeth. No radiation is emitted in the process. The image is instantly saved to our office’s lab and study model sites.

“The scanner is more accurate than traditional impressions and takes half the time,” says Alameda Pediatric Dentistry’s orthodontist, Dr. Kan. [Read more…]

Q&A with Lindsay, Alameda Pediatric Dentistry’s Marketing Director

Here’s a true testament of how great Alameda Pediatric Dentistry is to kids: many of the practice’s young patients grow up to bring their own kids here, and others even end up working here. APD’s marketing director, Lindsay, is one of those people. Here’s a Q&A with Lindsay to learn more about her love for marketing, the practice, and the city of Alameda.

What do you remember about being a patient at Alameda Pediatric Dentistry?

When I was a patient, I loved visiting the office to see everyone! My older brother, Aaron, used to work at Alameda Pediatric Dentistry, where he did sterilization throughout high school and college. Every time my parents would bring in my younger brother and I for check-ups and cleanings, the whole staff would be happy to see us; they were like family. Portia always cleaned my teeth, so it’s funny working with her because she practically watched me grow up! The thing I remember most about being a patient here were the video games and seeing an always-smiling Dr. Perry. [Read more…]

Turning on Cartoons Can Help Turn Off the Anxiety at the Dentist’s Office

Child at DentistKids love watching cartoons, and it turns out there’s a place where turning on the monitor can be especially comforting for them—the dentist’s office! According to a recent study of 56 randomly assigned children aged 7 to 9 years, kids who received dental treatment while watching cartoons showed less anxiety and more cooperation than those who received no distraction. The dental treatments conducted during the study included oral exams, injections with a local anesthetic, and tooth restoration. The findings, originally published in the journal Acta Odontologica Scandinavica, include the following: [Read more…]

Meet the Staff: Spotlight on Inventory Assistant Alexa G.

image1Alexa, an inventory assistant here at Alameda Pediatric Dentistry, has been working with our practice for three months and counting. As an inventory assistant, Alexa makes sure the office is always stocked with our fun-filled goodie bags for your kids to bring home following their appointments. She also helps our staff get the dental items that they need throughout the day.

“The thing I enjoy the most about coming to work is having interactions with my coworkers and getting to know the patients.” Alexa says. “What inspires me is how little kids come to Alameda Pediatric Dentistry with a smile and leave with a brighter smile after their appointment and their little faces light up when they get a goodie bag and stickers.”

Alexa was referred to us by East Bay Innovations, a nonprofit organization that supports adults with disabilities throughout Alameda County. “We are currently providing job coaching support to approximately 130 individuals throughout Alameda County,” says Saralynn Emery, assistant director of Supported Employment Services at East Bay Innovations. “It is my role to supervise and support coordinators and job coaches.” [Read more…]

Sharing Smiles for Oral Health Month

This month, Alameda Pediatric Dentistry was part of a nationwide effort to promote dental health for Oral Health Month.

Throughout the year, we celebrate healthy habits like brushing, flossing, and seeing the dentist. For the month of June, we joined thousands of others by posting a photo of our office staff, toothbrushes and inspection mirrors in hand, using #TimetoSmile.

For each photo that the public shared on social media using the hashtag, Colgate donated $1 to the Give Kids a Smile program. Give Kids a Smile has provided free oral health services to over 5 million underserved children, and we couldn’t miss the opportunity to help them receive up to $40,000 in funding. [Read more…]
