National Children’s Dental Health Month

National Children's Dental Health MonthFebruary is National Children’s Dental Health Month, and this year’s theme is “Healthy Habits for Healthy Smiles!”

Healthy Smile Tips

1. Brush your teeth 2x/day with fluoride toothpaste
2. Floss between your teeth daily
3. Eat healthy foods and limit sugar
4. See your dentist at least 2x/year

Teach your child early to brush back and forth in short (tooth-wide) strokes. Brush the teeth’s exterior, interior, and chewing surfaces. Tilt the brush vertically and make numerous up-and-down strokes to clean the inside surfaces of their front teeth. Ensure they are also brushing their tongue – this can eliminate bacteria and keep their breath fresh.

Brushing can be more fun when you have toothpaste with cool stripes or sparkles and a brush in your favorite color. (Look for products with the ADA Seal of Acceptance.) Fluoride toothpaste comes in lots of flavors, so your child will have plenty of cavity-fighting choices.

Flossing should become part of your child’s dental care routine as soon as they have two teeth that touch. Most children will need help flossing until they can do so on their own around the age of 10. We recommend parents still check on older children who floss on their own regularly to ensure they are flossing properly. This blog offers more tips on helping children floss.

Reduce the intake of sugary foods and beverages since they can cause tooth decay — especially if your child enjoys snacking! Click here for our dentist-approved snack recipes.

Your child’s oral health is crucial for an overall healthy life. To learn more about the best way to care for your child’s oral health, contact Alameda Pediatric Dentistry today to book an appointment. Our team can offer guidance and make recommendations for your child’s unique smile.

February 28 is National Tooth Fairy Day!

Did you know that Alameda Pediatric Dentistry has secret Tooth Fairy doors? This gives our tooth fairies a faster commute so they can come in at night and collect any teeth left at our office. Tooth Fairy Island

Our educational outreach program, Tooth Fairy Island, is just one way we help young kids learn how to take good care of their teeth and gums. Our presentations include fun, hands-on exercises and activities to engage and excite kids about brushing their teeth, flossing, and going to the dentist.

Tooth Fairy Island is an interactive presentation lasting 20-30 minutes. Every child will receive a goodie bag with toothpaste, floss, and a toothbrush. We typically provide these presentations on weekdays around 10/10:30AM. Give us a call today at 510-521-5437 or contact us online to schedule a Tooth Fairy Island visit for your school or daycare!
