Establish good habits early
It is important that parents begin cleaning their child’s mouth before teeth have erupted. By following our suggested practices, you will ensure that your infant is off to a strong start.
Before teeth have erupted
- Clean your baby’s mouth daily by wiping gum pads with a soft moistened washcloth or gauze pad.
After the first tooth
- Start brushing with water or fluoridated toothpaste and a soft bristled toothbrush.
- A “smear” of toothpaste is recommended for children lass than 2 years of age, and “pea-size” amount for children 2-5 years old.
- Flossing should begin when adjacent tooth surfaces.
Prepping for a healthy smile
Consult your pediatric dentist to ensure your baby is getting enough fluoride, and schedule the first dental visit within 6 months of the eruption of the first tooth.
The sucking of a thumb or pacifier is a natural habit for infants. Most children will discontinue this before their first permanent tooth appears. If your child’s habit continues beyond age three or four, discuss it with your pediatric dentist.
Children should be weaned from their bottle by their first birthday. Frequent or prolonged exposure to all types of sugars (including those found in processed milk, breast milk, formula, juices, and sweetened liquids) is not recommended for your child’s teeth, and may result in early decay or other common problems. Always clean your child’s teeth before bed, and never allow them to fall asleep with a bottle containing anything but water.
