Celebrating National Children’s Dental Health Month

February is National Children’s Dental Health Month, a time to shine a spotlight on the importance of oral health for kids

“As pediatric dental providers, we see first-hand how dental disease affects young people’s lives well into adulthood, and how much difference prevention and early care can make,” explains Dr. MyLinh Ngo.

Good oral health habits start early and last a lifetime. Encouraging kids to brush, floss, and visit the dentist regularly helps set the foundation for a lifetime of healthy smiles.

The Power of Prevention

Prevention is key when it comes to children’s oral health. In addition to brushing twice a day with fluoride toothpaste and flossing daily, here are some extra steps to help protect smiles:

  • Sealants Make Sense: Dental sealants can provide an added layer of protection against cavities, especially for molars.
  • Hydration Helps: Drinking water throughout the day helps rinse away bacteria and food particles, reducing the risk of decay.
  • Sports Safety: If your child plays sports, a properly fitted mouthguard can prevent dental injuries.

Making Dental Care Fun

Taking care of teeth doesn’t have to feel like a chore! Try these creative approaches to make brushing and flossing exciting:

  • Give Choices: Allow kids to pick out their own toothbrush, toothpaste, and floss. (Be sure to check for the ADA seal of acceptance!)
  • Dance Party: Play a two-minute song while toothbrushing!
  • Tracking + Reward System: Use a brushing calendar and small rewards to encourage consistency and keep kids motivated.

Tooth Fairy Island & Community Engagement

Did you know that February 28 is National Tooth Fairy Day? The Tooth Fairy loves visiting kids with healthy teeth! All of our dental offices have secret Tooth Fairy doors… Next time you visit, see if you can spot one!

We also continue to bring the magic of oral health education to the community through Tooth Fairy Island, our interactive outreach program. Schools and daycares can schedule a fun, hands-on dental health presentation where kids learn about brushing, flossing, and visiting the dentist in an engaging way. Contact us for more information!
