Nitrous oxide, commonly known as “laughing gas,” is a mild medication used in dental procedures to help patients feel calm and relaxed. It does not sedate or put a patient to sleep. It is particularly effective for children who may feel anxious or scared during their dental visits.

What is Nitrous Oxide?

Nitrous oxide is a colorless, odorless gas mixed with oxygen and inhaled through a small mask placed over the nose. It induces a sense of relaxation and comfort without putting the patient to sleep.

Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas)

How Does It Work?

• The gas is inhaled through a nosepiece.
• Within minutes, your child feels a calming effect, often described as lightness, warmth, or a “tingly” sensation.
• Nitrous oxide reduces anxiety, dulls pain perception, and often makes procedures feel shorter.
• Once the mask is removed and oxygen is administered, the effects wear off quickly, usually within a few minutes.

Why is it Used in Pediatric Dentistry?

• Anxiety Relief: Helps nervous or fearful children stay calm.
• Pain Reduction: Dulls discomfort during treatments.
• Safe and Effective: Its effects are easily controlled, and it wears off quickly.
• Minimally Invasive: No needles or heavy sedation is required.
• Cooperation: Makes it easier for children to sit still during procedures.
