Third molars, also known as wisdom teeth are the last set of teeth to develop, usually appearing in a person’s late teens or early twenties. While some people have no issues with their wisdom teeth, others experience problems such as pain, crowding, or infections, necessitating removal.
Our wonderful oral surgeon, Dr. Reed Rayher is here to help our community with their surgical needs.

Wisdom Teeth Extractions

Why Are Wisdom Teeth Extracted?

Wisdom teeth are often removed because they can cause various complications, including:

• Impaction: Wisdom teeth may not fully emerge due to a lack of space in the jaw, becoming trapped (impacted) under the gums or in the jawbone.

• Overcrowding: Erupting wisdom teeth can push against nearby teeth, causing misalignment.

• Tooth Decay or Gum Disease: Partially erupted wisdom teeth are hard to clean, increasing the risk of cavities and gum infections.

• Cysts or Tumors: Impacted wisdom teeth can lead to cyst formation, which may damage nearby teeth or jawbone.

• Pain or Swelling: Infections or pressure from the wisdom teeth can cause discomfort in the jaw, gums, or face.

When Should Wisdom Teeth Be Removed?

Wisdom teeth are often removed:

• Proactively in Adolescence: Before complications arise, especially if X-rays show potential issues.

• When Symptoms Appear: Such as pain, swelling, or infection.
